Holi is a celebration of positivity, peace, love and playfulness. It is a symbol of the festivity of good over evil. Although it has its provenance as an ancient Hindu religious festival but today Holi is popular with Hindus and non-Hindus.

I never celebrated Holi in my whole life. I got an opportunity to acknowledge this event. When I was in first year engineering our warden gave permission to celebrate the Holi in the hostel for the first time in forever! The first day of the festival we celebrated Holika Dahan, gathered wood for the lighting of the bonfire. Then the large pile of wood was ready to burn. Flaming Holi fire together on ground is a great joy to watch. Of course, any good celebration features music. We played the music and all of them started singing and dancing around the fire. Enjoyed the fire by dancing around it. Then the next morning we celebrated Holi in the hostel.  At the core of Holi is all about the colour. We mixed all coloured powder with water to smear, splash, and dump on anyone who comes into our sight. It doesn’t matter if you know the person or not everyone does it. At first, I was hesitating to approach strangers to spatter their faces with colour, but after it had happened to me a few times, it was much easier to do. Smeared the coloured powder onto friends.

Water is the another main component of the celebration, tossing buckets of water, splashing water on one another was entertaining. Applied colour to each other’s face and we are so thrilled to play. It’s good to see when all the powder surrounds us in the air. When we played drum beats of Pili Vesha (Tiger Dance) everyone began to shout and danced altogether to our great surprise even the warden joined with us. Everybody out there was startled to see her in this way. In the end I loved it! It feels so good to watch everyone young and old dancing around and having fun. Everyone abandons inhibition and plays like kids. I had a wonderful experience altogether with all my friends. It is purely a day of fun in this wonderful colourful event.
